Comparing margins is the fastest way to know where to open an account, market by market: at equal skill, one point less margin is one point more yield.
Reading a margin
The famous “1.90 both ways” on a handicap equals a 5.26% margin: that is the mass-market standard. A 1.95 / 1.95 market drops to 2.56%, a 1.83 / 1.83 market climbs to 9.29%.
The margin is not spread evenly
Bookmakers load more margin onto underdogs than onto favourites: this is the favourite–longshot bias, documented for decades. In concrete terms, odds of 15.00 are proportionally far more “taxed” than odds of 1.30.
Direct consequence: two markets showing the same overall margin are not equivalent. That is why computing the fair odds cannot settle for a proportional split.
Where to look for the lowest margins in France
No licensed operator is best everywhere. The trends visible on the French market:
- The tightest margins are found on high-volume fixtures — Ligue 1, Champions League, NBA, major tennis tournaments.
- The incumbents (Winamax, Betclic, Unibet, PMU) are aggressive on French football and far less so on secondary sports.
- Bookmakers that arrived more recently sometimes buy market share with low margins on targeted markets.
- The live bets and parlays almost always carry the heaviest margins.
The Stats&Bet odds comparison shows every French operator's margin in real time, market by market.
Frequently asked questions
Which French bookmaker has the lowest margin?
None has it everywhere: the margin depends on the sport, the competition and the market, and moves during the day. The Stats&Bet comparison computes it live for every licensed operator, which lets you pick the bookmaker at the moment of betting rather than once and for all.
What is a normal margin on a football match?
Between 5 and 8% on a top-league 1X2 at a French operator. Below 4%, you are on a very competitive market; above 10%, the market is thinly followed and the price unreliable.
Margin and payout rate — what's the difference?
They are two ways of expressing the same thing. The payout rate is the share returned to the player, the margin is what the bookmaker keeps: payout = 1 / (1 + margin). A 6% margin corresponds to a 94.3% payout rate.
Is a low margin enough to pick a bookmaker?
No. Settlement speed, tolerance of winning bettors, market depth and stake limits matter just as much. A low-margin bookmaker that limits your account after three weeks has no practical value.
